While fiber optic infrastructure in any building is desirable, the available optical deployment in the 222 Building is especially attractive. This attractiveness applies to both internal and external availability.
External Access
External access for connection to the local phone companies and to the long distance carriers is available from two separate vendors. At least one vendor has fault tolerant, protected fiber access into the building using SONET technology. This provides for access to the local central office as well as to the major long distance carriers. Both vendors provide single mode (long haul) fiber into the building for ready access to the outside world.
Internal Distribution
The building is equipped with multi-mode (short haul) fiber placed vertically between the floors. This will support local area network applications between floors within the building without the need for additional capital expense. In addition, the building is equipped with some single mode fiber. This single mode fiber is placed from the basement (telco entrance) to the 5th floor data center for special applications.
